The first day of the mega auction for the 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has concluded. The auction began at 3:00 PM IST in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The mega auction, which takes place once every three years, last occurred before the 2022 IPL. Between mega auctions, mini auctions are held, allowing teams to retain more players. Mini auctions were conducted for the 2023 and 2024 IPL seasons.
All 10 IPL franchises participated in the auction with their management teams. A total of 1,574 players registered for the mega auction, out of which 577 were shortlisted after showing interest from the teams. Among these, there were 367 Indian players and 210 overseas players, including four from associate nations. Additionally, 331 players were uncapped, with 319 being Indians and 12 from overseas.

On the first day, 72 players were auctioned, and teams collectively spent ₹467.95 crore. Of these players, 24 were overseas. The highest bid of the day was for Rishabh Pant, who fetched a record ₹27 crore, making him the most expensive player in IPL history. Punjab Kings were the most active franchise, purchasing 10 players for ₹88 crore. The second and final day of the auction will take place on Monday.
IPL 2025 Auction Day 1: Indian Cricketers Dominate the Spotlight
The first day of the auction was dominated by Indian players, with significant amounts being spent on them. Both Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer were sold for record-breaking amounts. Shreyas Iyer was initially bought by Punjab Kings for ₹26.75 crore, becoming the most expensive player in IPL history at that point. However, shortly after, Rishabh Pant was acquired by Lucknow Super Giants for ₹27 crore, surpassing Shreyas’ record. Pant’s bid also broke the previous record held by Mitchell Starc, who had been the highest-paid player in the prior auction.
Apart from Pant and Shreyas, Venkatesh Iyer also attracted a substantial bid, being purchased by Kolkata Knight Riders for ₹23.75 crore. Additionally, Indian players like Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal, and KL Rahul saw high bids. Arshdeep and Chahal were both bought by Punjab Kings for ₹18 crore each, while Rahul was acquired by Delhi for ₹14 crore.
On the other hand, notable players like Devdutt Padikkal, Jonny Bairstow, and David Warner went unsold on the first day of the auction.
