2025 is just getting started and it’s already been a huge year for Sophie Powers! Not only did she drop her infectiously catchy single ‘Goals,’ but she’s expressing her love for design with a colorful fashion collection with Gloomy Bear and ACDC RAG! This adorable collection includes two parts with different color schemes, all inspired by Gloomy Bear and Sophie’s debut Glitch: Lvl. 1 EP. The pink and turquoise pieces of Part 1 dropped on February 5th, and you’ll have to keep your eyes open for Part 2, with darker colors, to come out on February 17th!
We’ve officially crossed one of our 2025 goals off our list, because we got to ask Sophie all about her Gloomy Bear collection, anthemic ‘Goals’ single, and more in an exclusive Q&A! Press play on ‘Goals’ below and keep reading to learn more about Sophie’s latest projects.
Hi Sophie, congrats on the release of your Gloomy Bear collection with ACDC RAG! How excited are you to see how much fans love the collection?
I’m so excited to see how the Powerpuffs respond to my first step into the design world. I’ve been showing them my designs for years with the promise of eventually starting a brand, and this finally feels like what I have been promising and what they have been asking for coming to light!
The collection is inspired by your debut Glitch: Lvl. 1 EP, and it’s such a cool way to bring the EP to life! What was the creative process like, and how did your EP inspire these pieces?
I have synesthesia. I see colors, textures, and sounds if I hear a song associated with one of my five senses and it’s the exact same way for designs. I was designing this whole collection while I was still making the EP before it was even released. The EP itself was really the beginning factor before I even put pen to paper for any colorway ideas or designs. It was all derivative of what was going on in my life at the moment in time. It has been in development for a while but I’m so excited and happy that it finally translated and is gonna be available for everyone to hear, see, touch, smell, and wear.
There are two main color palettes for the collection, with Part 1 playing with bright pinks and Part 2 using darker shades. If you had to sort the songs on Glitch: Lvl. 1 into these two color palettes, which songs would you match with each palette?
I love this question! For Part 1, I would put ‘Whoa!!,’ ‘Awesome,’ and ‘Bathroom Floor,’ as well as ‘Overflow.’ Part 2, I would put ‘Better on Mute,’ ‘Nosebleed,’ and ‘Obsessed.’
You’ve been behind a lot of the creative elements of your music career, from music videos to outfits. It’s been so fun as fans to keep up with! Did you approach this collection any differently than you usually approach your visual projects?
Thank you! Yes, it’s been very fun but also a lot of work being so hands-on. I approached this collection in the same hands-on manner – but the Gloomy Bear and ACDC RAG team helped out a ton! I’m very visually driven so this wasn’t any different from past projects. I treated the clothing collection as 2 mini albums – with a part 1 similar to GLITCH LVL 1 and a part 2 similar to what would’ve been GLITCH LVL 2. There’s a storyline with more than just one beginning and end.
Speaking of your creativity, you’ve been designing clothes since you were eight! What do you think 8-year-old Sophie would think of your Gloomy Bear collection?
8-year-old me would probably rock one of these outfits!! And be confused why I still love the same two colors.
We’ve had your latest single, ‘Goals,’ on repeat! What does the song mean to you, and what has it been like to see how much Powerpuffs love it?
Thank you guys for listening to my latest single, ‘Goals!’ The song means so much to me and it’s such a powerful anthemic song. I grew up watching hockey living in Canada and the NHL EA Sports team synced it into their official soundtrack. It’s truly been a surreal release and experience for that reason and the reception of course has been overwhelming with love I am so thankful and grateful to my fans.
And as MIDZY Powerpuffs, we’ve loved seeing you mention ITZY in some of your ‘Goals’ Reels! If you could work with them on a remix of one of your songs and one of theirs, which songs would you choose and why?
I love ITZY so much! If I could work with them on a remix for any of my songs, of course it would have to be ‘Goals’ because I literally say their name in my song. ITZY if you’re up for it, HMU!
You [performed] ‘Goals’ at the Gloomy Bear Tokyo Rave on February 8th, which we’re sure [was] so much fun! How do you prepare for your shows?
I prepare for shows by listening to ‘Poker Face’ by Lady Gaga right before I walk on stage. I also make sure to have a throat coat tea with honey and use a voice humidifier a few hours before I walk on stage. Getting enough sleep and eating the right food, of course, is very important but it’s also the people you surround yourself with on the day of a show. If I have to have an intense conversation, I’d like to avoid that by all means possible because it truly can shift my mental state for that performance. That has happened to me a few times, but the show must go on!
What can Powerpuffs look forward to in the rest of 2025?
The Powerpuffs can look forward to lots of new music. I have four singles already slotted for 2025, as well as a project towards the end of the year, maybe even a mini album. I’m sitting on a lot of music right now, new merch, and new designs as well. The Gloomy Bear collection will not be the only design of mine to see the light in 2025. I’m so excited!
Is there anything else you’d like to mention or say to your fans that the questions didn’t touch on?
I want to thank my fans for being patient while I haven’t released new music in a while but to be excited for this new era because it’s going to be my most mature and dark one yet!
