7 years have passed since their debut, and many things have changed for (G)I-DLE – including their name. Their 7th anniversary marked a new beginning for i-dle, where they are more true to themselves and can showcase their artistry and individuality even more than before. With gorgeous, artistic trailers, i-dle started a new era and redefined what it meant to be a group, highlighting each member’s strengths as individuals and as a group. We are is i-dle‘s big statement – their most authentic, fierce, and unique release to date, and here’s how they did it.
‘Good Thing’
i-dle are always bringing fresh, new concepts to the K-Pop landscape, and ‘Good Thing’ is no different. Except this time, they did it a bit differently. ‘Good Thing’ feels new, but it also has all the 2nd gen production vibes with the mixture of electronics and grunge, witty repeated words, as well as the most catchy melodies you’ll ever hear. ‘Good Thing’ is unserious and fun, but it’s also empowering and inspires independence, and who better than i-dle to pull off something like this?
And would it be an i-dle release without giving us one of the best music videos of the year? ‘Good Thing’ is like any i-dle music video, cranked up to the max. They explore different concepts and stylings and go all out with every single one. Of course, if i-dle were to call out hypocrisy in the industry, they would do it exactly like this – with humor, personality and style. The experience of ‘Good Thing’ is unique, and its music video is a must-watch.
We are
Before we got ‘Good Thing,’ i-dle did their thing and dropped a pre-release song: ‘Girlfriend.’ Following the topics explored in ‘Good Thing,’ ‘Girlfriend’ is all about leaving love and relationships behind for friendship. They translate the empowerment in ‘Good Thing’ to everyone around them with ‘Girlfriend.’ No other song will make you forget about your problems like ‘Girlfriend.’ The song embodies a night out with friends, lost in the night, in the most fun way – and so does the music video.
Soyeon always gives us gold with her songs: ‘Good Thing’ and ‘Girlfriend’ give us hit after hit and serve as the best openers. But We are is an album that showcases each of the girls’ power as songwriters and how their individuality translates into i-dle to create something truly unique. Each of the five members had their hands in at least one of the songs in We are, creating a mini-album that could only be created by a group like i-dle.
Yuqi gave us ‘Love Tease,’ an absolute banger that scratches the right spot of our brain with its addictive retro synth feeling. While ‘Good Thing’ and ‘Girlfriend’ are fierce and confident, ‘Love Tease‘ shows a side of vulnerability, with a narrative about being afraid of loving and afraid of hurting people. Yet, it’s one of the most catchy songs in the mini-album. It’s been a few months since Minnie’s solo debut, and we’re still not over the pop perfection she gave us in HER. Lucky for us, We are has a song by Minnie. ‘Chain’ is a dark, sensual track that explores love at its more intoxicating and intense levels.
‘Unstoppable’ screams Miyeon’s name as she brings something sweet, soul-like, and elegant to We are. This track makes their unique vocals shine the most with soft moments and impactful melodies. But We are closes off with one of their most beautiful ballads yet, written by Shuhua. i-dle have released very few ballads such as this – with a stripped instrumental and OST feel. It is fitting that ‘If You Want’— a song about growing up, growing apart from someone you love, and finding peace in goodbye—would be the song to close off a release that is all about re-birth, re-invention, and owning their true selves. i-dle are simply an unstoppable force. They know exactly who they are, and they know how to explore it and how to redefine themselves and the industry along the way. We are is only the beginning of a monumental chapter in their history.
