Book Overview: Writing Mr. Right

Summary: Legal secretary by day, aspiring novelist by night, Ziya Khan pours herself into writing stories featuring the kinds of diverse characters she loves. In exchange, she’s got a growing pile of rejection letters. When yet another “thanks but no thanks” arrives on the eve of her thirtieth birthday, Ziya decides to throw her novel and her dreams in the trash. End of story.

Except that when Ziya wakes up, there’s a flesh-and-blood version of her muse standing in her kitchen. His name is Aashiq, and it’s his job to inspire Ziya to write again. From singing karaoke to standing up for herself at work, he’s pushing Ziya out of the sidelines and into the world, showing her how to live and love fully.

Even more impossibly, something starts to blossom between them. But as Ziya rediscovers the joy of writing, Aashiq starts to disappear. His job is almost done. And it seems soon Ziya will have to choose: Her art…or her heart?

Ziya’s Girlboss Moments

When Ziya’s birthday wish results in Aashiq’s sudden appearance, her confusion turns into annoyance at first. She didn’t know who he was and what business he had following her everywhere. But Ziya quickly finds that Aashiq brings out the best in her. He helps her step out of her comfort zone in smallish doses. And before we knew it, she was securing donations for her friend’s hospital and standing up to her boss to fund her law degree. Ziya really is that girl, and we loved her character development.

This Is Aashiq’s First Life

Writing Mr. Right introduces Aashiq as the muse of Ziya’s mind. His job is to help her find inspiration and store it to use in her writing. So Aashiq only existed in Ziya’s head before. But once he becomes his own person, he realizes there is a lot that he doesn’t know how to do. It was so endearing seeing him try things like cooking, cleaning, and learning how to use the copiers and printers in Ziya’s office. He has such a boyish innocence that comes with exploring a world for the first time.

Finding The Love For Writing

Ziya and Aashiq’s romance isn’t the only love story in Writing Mr. Right. Ziya also falls back in love with writing. When she wrote books before, it was always a necessity, a solitary act at night. Her pile of rejections all said the same: they couldn’t connect with her characters. Aashiq’s writing boot camp showed her how to bring people into her stories and create characters that really resonate with readers. She not only rekindles her love and appreciation for writing, but also for trying her best and letting loose at times.

Alina Khawaja’s Writing Mr. Right offers a quirky contemporary romance that inspires us to invest in ourselves, connect with others, and of course, use positive affirmations daily.
