It sounds cliché, but we truly haven’t been able to get mgk’s ‘cliché’ out of our heads since it dropped! Between the lyrics and the exciting music video, the release plays with all sorts of clichés, like wanting to run away with someone, worrying they might be better off alone, and dancing around in the rain. The song debuted at #62 on the Billboard Hot 100 and we hope our fellow EST members have been enjoying it as much as we have to continue its reign on the charts!
But in true mgk fashion, he’s keeping us spoiled with new content. He also delivered a behind-the-scenes video showing us what it was like on the set of the ‘cliché’ music video! Check it out below for some funny insights on dancing in the (fake) rain and more:
To celebrate the success of ‘cliché’ and how much fun Kells seems to be having with the cliché theme, we’re pairing some of our favorite cheesy romcom clichés with his songs! Grab the popcorn and your headphones, then let’s dive right in.
Friends-To-Lovers & Secret Romance: ‘why are you here’
Starting off strong with a track that pairs two romcom tropes! Throughout ‘why are you here,’ mgk tells the story of running into a love interest at a party… when she’s there with someone else in their friend group. Very messy, would make for a 10/10 movie scene. But we can’t really blame the other guy, because he says himself that he “can’t even tell [his] closest homies, nobody knows.” You can really feel the passion and tension between Kells and this person, which makes you root for them to truly be together by the end of the song! In the end, they “can never be friends” because their feelings make it impossible to stay platonic.
Second-Chance Love: ‘Waste Love’
Yes, we’ll take absolutely every opportunity possible to talk about ‘Waste Love.’ It has a much different energy than the other songs on this list, namely because it feels so hopeless at times, but that’s part of why we paired it with the Second-Chance Love trope! Throughout the song, Kells talks about some of mistakes he’s made in a relationship, even admitting he “tried to get away with the worst” but his partner caught him. Can they turn things around and give it another try before it’s too late? The outro seems to give a little optimism: “I thought we were done, how’d you end up in my arms last night?”
Forced Proximity & Forbidden Love: ‘my ex’s best friend’
There’s a fun crush vibe throughout ‘my ex’s best friend,’ but things really kick off during the first pre-chorus. Colson finds himself getting a ride home with this woman when she asks if she can step inside with him, then they wind up kissing on the elevator. Buuuuuut there’s a bit of an awkward problem: she’s evidently best friends with his ex per the title, but she’s also best friends with “[his] boy’s new girl.” Pretty wild, but maybe they’ll be able to push through!
