Exactly on their debut anniversary, girl band KATSEYE released their second brand-new EP, Beautiful Chaos. Manon, Daniela, Yoonchae, Meghan, Lara, and Sophia gave us a music project that reminded us of 2010 girl groups. They also gave us authentic and on-brand songs. Beautiful Chaos is an EP that doesn’t follow trends and feels organic to them. In each song, we can hear that, in fact, this is KATSEYE. At The Honey Pop, we loved the EP, and here is our review so you can be as obsessed as we are with Beautiful Chaos!

Everything Is Gnarly

The EP starts with ‘Gnarly,’ a song that, even in the girls’ words, you have to listen more than once to get it. Being a hyperpop production, ‘Gnarly’ felt like the band was taking a new direction from previous songs like ‘Debut’ and ‘Touch.’ Also, the lyrics from ‘Gnarly’ are weird but also fun and bold, which surprised most of the fans. But the thing about KATSEYE is that the girls have personalities that aren’t built for the media. They are authentic and different from each other, but when you get them together, you get something as awesome as ‘Gnarly’.

Hands Off Gabriela

Next, we have ‘Gabriela,’ a song with Latin rhythms, and even Daniela singing in Spanish. As a global girl group, having the girls sing in their native languages is extremely important. You can’t fit all their cultures in a single box. We hope to hear more songs in the future where the girls sing in their native tongues! Also, can we talk about the music video? The entire telenovela atmosphere suits the song perfectly, especially with the acting and the dramatic nature of everything. The song is about begging, in this case, ‘Gabriela,’ to stay out of a relationship. However, for the girls, it is more about knowing that if there’s a ‘Gabriela’ in a relationship, then the relationship isn’t worth it! If you want to add a little drama to your life, listen to this song and create a whole cinematic vibe out of a ’90s telenovela!

You’re Just a Gameboy

Now, our personal favorite has to be ‘Gameboy.’ The lyrics are fun and catchy, and even play with the words “Game Boy,” as in the Nintendo console, and “playboy,” as in, you know, a boy you should stay away from. We are sure this song is a fan favorite among the fans who loved ‘Touch‘. However, we think that ‘Gameboy’ feels more mature and fits more with what KATSEYE is. In the song, the pop production is the main character, but in an industry in which pop songs are coming out every day, it’s even harder to keep track of them; a song like ‘Gameboy’ feels fresh. It also showcases how the girls aim to continue making pop music while also innovating within the genre.

God Bless Even The Mean Girls

Of all the five songs on the EP, ‘Mean Girls’ has to be the one that relates the most to KATSEYE’s history. After Dream Academy, the girls received much backlash from the public, portraying them as the mean girls of the show. However, with this song, we can realize that, in fact, all of us, at least once, have been the mean girl of somebody else’s story. Also, the lyrics of the song are more about sorority and girl power no matter what type of girl you are, even if someone considers you a mean girl. We also have to say that this song reminds us of Little Mix songs and how they made us feel powerful by being girls!

I’ll Go M.I.A.

After the softness of the pop ballad that is ‘Mean Girls,’ ‘M.I.A.’ is the perfect ending for the EP. Being a dance-pop song, ‘M.I.A.’ is the type of track you listen to while driving fast in a car. It showed us again what KATSEYE is, with a production that gave us a whole new level of the girls’ vocals and what they can do with their voices. This song is all about getting hyped up, and we can’t wait to hear it live!

This EP is a huge step for the girls in terms of the music they want to create. Don’t get us wrong, we love songs like ‘Touch’ and ‘Debut ‘; however, with Beautiful Chaos, we feel that this is KATSEYE in a way that feels authentic and unique. For some, the EP may be difficult to understand, especially if you hoped to hear songs that were like their first ones. However, we encourage you to give it more than one listen before coming to terms with the songs. After all, the new EP is a Beautiful Chaos.
