Jannik Sinner has enjoyed a seamless European clay season so far, triumphing in Monte-Carlo and Madrid. But there will be something extra at stake for the Italian when he steps on court at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome.
For the first time since January’s Australian Open, Sinner will be defending PIF ATP Rankings points when he competes at his home ATP Masters 1000 event. In 2025, the Italian reached his maiden Rome championship match, meaning he will begin his title bid this year 590 points down in the PIF ATP Live Rankings.
The 24-year-old Sinner will be in a similar situation later this month at Roland Garros, where he also reached the final in 2025 and will therefore be defending 1,300 points. At the same time, his great Lexus ATP Head2Head rival Carlos Alcaraz is already guaranteed to drop 3,000 points across both events: The Spaniard will not be able to defend his title at either tournament due to a right wrist injury.
Sinner’s current iron grip on World No. 1 is remarkable considering he trailed Alcaraz by as many as 3,350 points in the PIF ATP Rankings as recently as 2 February. The 28-time tour-level titlist, who can complete the Career Golden Masters by winning a record sixth consecutive Masters 1000 title in Rome, now has the chance to put significant distance between himself and Alcaraz: If Sinner wins the Rome title, he would move 2,790 points clear of the Spaniard.
However, if Sinner were to lose his first match in Rome, where he plays Alex Michelsen or Sebastian Ofner in his opening round, he would leave the Italian capital with a healthy, yet considerably less sizable lead of 1,800 points. Alcaraz has 11,960 points in the PIF ATP Live Rankings.
Sinner’s potential PIF ATP Live Rankings points in Rome
| Round | Points |
| R64 | 13,760 |
| R32 | 13,800 |
| R16 | 13,850 |
| QF | 13,950 |
| SF | 14,150 |
| F | 14,400 |
| W | 14,750 |
If Sinner ultimately loses points across his final two events of the clay season, it could prove significant in the months to come, especially given he has a major title (and with it 2,000 PIF ATP Rankings points) to defend at Wimbledon in June.
